Today is Gloria Steinem‘s 80th Birthday. For those of you who do not know Steinem is a pioneering writer and activist who has been a champion of women’s rights for decades.
In 1972 Steinem helped to co-found Ms. magazine, a magazine she still contributes to. She is the founder or co-founder of countless organizations, including, the Women’s Action Alliance , the National Women’s Political Caucus, Board of Choice USA, Ms. Foundation for Women, and the Women’s Media Center. She also helped to start Take Our Daughters to Work Day.
I could go on and on with Steinem’s impressive achievements but I think you all get the idea.
In honor of her birthday I wanted to collect some of my favorite Gloria Steinem quotes and share them with all of you.
A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.
The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn.
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.
Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning.
We’ve begun to raise daughters more like sons… but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.
Women are not going to be equal outside the home until men are equal in it.
A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.
And one of my all time favorites:
Shit equally divided is always better than shit unequally divided
One of Steinem’s qualities that inspires me the most is her honesty. She has never been afraid to say what she thinks, even when she is fiercely outnumbered. With her honesty comes the ability to admit she was wrong. As I mentioned in a previous post that Steinem had a history of quite transphobic for many years but just within the last year wrote a piece apologizing for her previous statements and highlighted the importance of working together, regardless of identities.
Gloria publicly embodies qualities that I think we can all learn from, myself included. Honesty, bravery, and humbleness. Never be scared to stand up for your belief and never be too proud to admit when you are wrong.
Happy Birthday Gloria.
