Happy Birthday Esther Rome!
Esther Rome was born in Norwich, Connecticut on September 8th, 1945. She spent her childhood in Plainfield, Connecticut, where her parents ran a five-and-dime store. Though her roots began as a small town girl she grew to do big things for women across the world. After high school, Rome completed her undergraduate degree at Brandies University in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon completing that she continued to earn a Master’s degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
Happy Birthday May Edward Chinn!
On April 15, 1896 May Edward Chinn was born to William Lafayette Chinn, an escaped slave, and Lulu Ann Evans, a Native American from the Chickahominy Indian Reservation.
Chinn was sent to boarding school at a young ago but soon would have to return after she became ill with osteomyelitis of the jaw, an infectious inflammatory bone disease. She would have to spend time with her mother who worked as a live-in domestic worker for the Tiffany family in New York City.

As you can tell this birthday of the month post is going to be slightly different. This month I want to honor the birth of not a person but an entire celebration, Women’s History Month. As I was deciding whom to write about for my monthly birthday post I realized it was the first day of Women’s History Month, a celebration I thought I was quite familiar with.

Happy Birthday Belva Lockwood!
On October 24th, 1830 Belva Ann Bennet was born in Royalton, New York. When she was a teenager Belva married Uriah McNall, together they had one daughter. Unfortunately, shortly after their marriage McNall passed away. She quickly became the only provider for her and her daughter, Lura. Belva worked as a teacher to support her family but also wanted to continue on with her education, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in science in 1857 from Genessee College.

Comedian Lily Tomlin was born in 1939 and grew up in Michigan with her parents and one older brother. Tomlin was not pursuing comedy when she began college at Wayne State University.
Happy Birthday Lucille Ball!
On August 6th of 1911 the hilariously talented Lucille Ball entered the world. Lucille was born in Jamestown, New York to a small struggling family. Her father, Henry, worked as an electrician having to move around the country to find work. Only three years after Lucille’s birth her father fell sick with typhoid fever and passed shortly after in 1915.
